Because
digital paintings are done right
on the computer from a
photograph, (called photo
derivative art), the quality of
original photo is critical to
the final outcome of the
painting. In this case
however, quality does not mean
subject matter, it means
pixels! Digital art is
painting with pixels.
And since a picture is worth a
thousand words, our Golden
Retriever Sadie has volunteered
to be our model to demonstrate
what is meant in regards to
pixilation and the kinds of
photos that can be submitted for
artwork.
By all appearances, this looks
like it would be a nice photo of
Sadie to paint.

And though it is a beautiful
photo of Sadie... she is too far
away for the image to translate
well into a digital portrait
painting.
This is the same photo zoomed in
to Sadie's face. The
details have been lost. A
detailed portrait would be
difficult to paint from this
image.
This photo is better...

Sadie is close enough to the
camera that the details of
her face are not lost in the
pixels when the image is
cropped and zoomed in!

Even better still is this close up of
Sadie's face, below...
...oops our model has fallen asleep!
